Writing course Part 2: Criticism - constructive criticism.

”Criticism, like rain, should be gentle enough to nourish a man's growth without destroying his roots.” ― Frank Howard Clark

Part 2 of the writing course focused on an important aspect of the writing process - giving and receiving criticism. The word criticism originates from the Greek word Kritikos, which means to discern. It is important to understand that criticism is not just about finding errors or criticising someone's work, but rather about analysing and assessing it in a constructive way. Therefore, when receiving criticism, one should not take it personally or negatively, but rather see it as receiving a gift.

When we write, or work on other things, it is easy for us to become blind to our own shortcomings and weaknesses in our work. Receiving feedback and criticism from others is therefore essential to improve and develop. By exposing our work to others, we gain new perspectives and insights that can help us grow in our various professions.

Giving constructive criticism requires empathy, respect and humility. It is about communicating in a way that is rewarding and helpful rather than destructive and degrading. By showing that you care about the person and their work, it will be easier for them to receive and use the criticism in a constructive way. This is an art in itself. It's about being constructive and giving informed opinions and comments. Criticism should be informative and helpful, not degrading or patronising. By giving criticism in a respectful and constructive way, we can help each other see the work from a different perspective and identify areas for improvement.

Similarly, it is important to be able to receive criticism in a constructive way. It can be difficult to hear negative feedback on your work, but it is important to remember that criticism is there to help us grow and develop. Being open to criticism and seeing it as an opportunity to learn and improve in your profession is crucial to taking your work to the next level.

I thought this was a good part, and it's something I work on a lot in my daily work as a service manager. It is an important job, an important role where you can do so much for others. Because isn't it great to be able to give and receive criticism in a constructive way? To see how either you develop yourself, or how you help to develop others? It's absolutely fantastic.

This is really a big part of the writing process for us writers. And it's something that we have to be open to and deal with in a constructive way in order to develop in the best possible way. By being open to feedback and seeing it as an opportunity to learn and improve ourselves, we can become better at what we do. Criticism should not be seen as an attack on our work but as an opportunity to grow and develop. By having an open attitude and being willing to listen to others' opinions, we can take our work to the next level and become successful writers!
